What a great photo! When I lived in Marin, I loved walking around Lake Lagunitas, where there is a colony of Acorn Woodpeckers.

Wowie. I’d thought woodpeckers were exclusively bugmeateaters.

Do they aactually eat the acorns? I have some memory of their “farming” the acorns, i.e. putting them in holes in a tree trunk…the farm…and using the bugs that eventually develope in the acorns to feed their young.

I’ve heard about half of their diet is acorns. They do often hawk insects too.
